Student Life

Studying abroad is about more than just academics. Here is what you can expect from life as an international student.

South Korea offers an exciting and dynamic student life. Korean universities have a vibrant campus culture with numerous student clubs, festivals, and social events. The MT (membership training) — an overnight group trip — is a uniquely Korean university tradition that helps you bond with classmates.

D-2 visa holders can work part-time after 6 months of enrollment (though first-semester restrictions apply). Work hours are limited during the term but more flexible during breaks. Common part-time jobs (알바 or 'alba') include convenience stores, restaurants, cafes, tutoring English, and factory work, paying ₩9,860-12,000/hour.

Korea's public transport system is world-class and affordable, and the country's compact size makes weekend trips to Busan, Jeju, Gyeongju, and other destinations easy. Korean street food, K-pop concerts, gaming culture, and vibrant nightlife make student life in Korea uniquely exciting. The growing Nepali community in Korea, particularly in areas like Ansan, Dongdaemun, and around major universities, provides a familiar support network while you adapt to Korean life.

Study in South Korea — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the GKS/KGSP scholarship?
The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), formerly called the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP), is a fully funded scholarship for international students from partner countries including Nepal. It covers full tuition, monthly allowance (₩900,000-1,000,000), return airfare, medical insurance, settlement allowance, and 1 year of Korean language training before your degree. Application is usually through the Korean Embassy in Kathmandu or through designated Korean universities.
Do I need to speak Korean to study in South Korea?
Not necessarily. Many Korean universities offer degree programs taught entirely in English, especially at the graduate level. However, GKS scholars receive 1 year of intensive Korean language training before starting their degree, which gives them a strong foundation. For Korean-taught programs, TOPIK Level 3 is the minimum requirement (Level 4-5 preferred). Even for English-taught programs, learning Korean will greatly improve your daily life and job prospects.
Can I work part-time in South Korea as a student?
Yes, but there are restrictions. D-2 visa holders can apply for part-time work permission after their first semester. During the academic term, work hours are limited (20 hours/week for D-2 students with TOPIK Level 3+). During vacations, you can work more hours. The minimum hourly wage is ₩9,860 (2024). Common jobs include convenience stores, restaurants, English tutoring, and factory work.
How competitive is the GKS scholarship?
GKS is competitive but achievable. Nepal typically receives 15-25 GKS scholarship slots per year across undergraduate and graduate levels. A strong academic record (above 80%), a well-written study plan, good recommendation letters, and a clear explanation of why you want to study in Korea are essential. Having basic Korean language skills (even TOPIK Level 1-2) is a significant advantage. We help you prepare a competitive application.
What can I do after graduating in South Korea?
After graduation, you can apply for the D-10 Job Seeking visa (valid for up to 2 years) to find employment in Korea. Once employed, you switch to an E-7 work visa. South Korea has been easing immigration policies to attract skilled workers, especially in engineering, IT, and other technical fields. Many Korean companies actively recruit international graduates. Alternatively, your Korean degree and language skills are highly valued back in Nepal and across Asia.
