Student Life

Studying abroad is about more than just academics. Here is what you can expect from life as an international student.

Life as a Nepali student in Australia is rewarding and full of opportunities. Australian cities consistently rank among the world's most livable, with excellent public transport, healthcare, and safety. Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane have established Nepali communities with restaurants, cultural organizations, and festival celebrations that help you feel at home.

You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during term time and unlimited hours during breaks. With Australia's high minimum wage of AUD 23.23/hour, part-time work can cover a significant portion of your living expenses. Popular jobs include hospitality, retail, delivery services, and aged care.

After completing your degree, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) allows you to stay and work in Australia for 2-4 years. If you study and work in regional Australia, you can get additional years. This post-study work period is your opportunity to gain Australian work experience, which is valuable for both your career and permanent residency applications.

Study in Australia — Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work while studying in Australia?
Yes. Student visa (subclass 500) holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during the academic term and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. The minimum wage is AUD 23.23/hour, and most part-time jobs pay AUD 23-30/hour. Common jobs for Nepali students include hospitality, retail, delivery, cleaning, and aged care.
What is the GTE statement and why is it important?
The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement is a written declaration explaining why you want to study in Australia, why you chose your specific course, and what your plans are after completing your studies. It is the most scrutinized part of your visa application. Immigration officers use it to assess whether you are a genuine student or are primarily coming for work/migration purposes. Our counselors are experts at helping you write a convincing GTE statement.
What is the PR pathway after studying in Australia?
After completing your degree and gaining work experience on your post-study work visa, you can apply for permanent residency through the General Skilled Migration program. You earn points for your Australian qualification, age, English proficiency, and work experience. Studying and working in regional Australia gives you additional points. The exact pathway depends on your occupation and point score, but many Nepali graduates successfully obtain PR within 2-4 years of completing their studies.
How much bank balance do I need for an Australian student visa?
You need to demonstrate access to funds covering your first year of tuition plus AUD 21,041 for living expenses, plus travel costs. For example, if your tuition is AUD 30,000, you should show approximately AUD 51,000-55,000 (around NPR 50-55 lakh). These funds can be in your own account or a sponsor's (parent's) account. The money should ideally have been in the account for 3-6 months. We guide you on exactly how to prepare your financial documentation.
Which Australian cities are best for Nepali students?
Melbourne and Sydney have the largest Nepali communities and the most job opportunities, but they are also the most expensive. Brisbane and Adelaide offer a good balance of affordability, job availability, and quality of life. Perth and Hobart are growing in popularity. Studying in regional areas (outside major cities) can give you additional post-study work visa years and PR points. We help you choose the right city based on your program, budget, and career goals.
