Study in Japan from Nepal: MEXT Scholarship Guide
Why Japan is an Excellent Choice for Nepali Students
Japan is one of the most affordable developed countries for Nepali students, especially with the MEXT scholarship. Even without a scholarship, tuition at Japanese national universities is significantly lower than in Australia, USA, or UK. Japan has a strong Nepali community (over 150,000 Nepalis live in Japan), world-class technology and research facilities, and a safe, clean living environment.
What is the MEXT Scholarship?
MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) is the Japanese Government scholarship program. It is one of the most comprehensive scholarships in the world, covering virtually all expenses for international students.

How to Apply (Embassy Recommendation Route)
The Embassy recommendation is the most common route for Nepali students. The process typically follows this timeline:
- April: Application opens at the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu. Submit application form, academic transcripts, research plan (for research students), and other required documents.
- May-June: Written examinations at the Embassy (English, Japanese, and subject-specific exams depending on your category).
- June-July: Interview at the Embassy for shortlisted candidates.
- August-September: Embassy nominates selected candidates to MEXT in Tokyo.
- October-January: MEXT reviews applications and matches students with universities.
- January-March: Final results announced. Scholarship recipients prepare for departure.
- April: Arrive in Japan and begin studies.
Tips for a Successful MEXT Application
- Research plan is crucial: For research students, your field of study and research plan is the most important document. Be specific about what you want to research and why Japan is the right place for it.
- Connect with professors: Before applying, try to contact potential supervising professors at Japanese universities. A professor who is interested in your research can significantly boost your chances.
- Academic performance matters: MEXT generally expects a GPA of 2.3/3.0 or above, but higher is better.
- Learn basic Japanese: While not required for English-taught programs, even basic Japanese knowledge shows commitment and improves your application.
- Prepare well for exams: The Embassy exams are the first screening. Study past papers and prepare thoroughly.
Life as a Student in Japan
Japan offers a unique student experience. Universities have modern facilities, and the country is known for safety, punctuality, and cleanliness. You can work up to 28 hours per week on a student visa, earning JPY 1,000-1,200 per hour. Common jobs include convenience store staff, restaurant work, and tutoring.
The Nepali community in Japan is large and supportive. Cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka have Nepali restaurants, community organizations, and cultural events. Many MEXT scholars from Nepal have gone on to successful academic and professional careers both in Japan and back in Nepal.
