Test Preparation

IELTS Preparation Tips for Nepali Students

By Global Study Nepal Team |

Why IELTS Matters for Nepali Students

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the most widely accepted English proficiency test for studying abroad. Almost every university in Australia, UK, Canada, and New Zealand requires IELTS. Many US universities also accept it alongside TOEFL. For Nepali students, scoring well on IELTS is often the first major step toward studying abroad.

The IELTS Academic test has four modules: Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes), and Speaking (11-14 minutes). Each is scored on a band of 1-9, and your overall score is the average of all four.

Target Scores for Popular Destinations

  • Australia: 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0
  • UK: 6.0-7.0 overall depending on university
  • Canada: 6.0-6.5 overall (6.0 for SDS pathway)
  • USA: 6.5+ (many universities prefer TOEFL)

Listening Module Tips

The Listening module is often where Nepali students score highest because exposure to English media is common in Nepal. To improve:

  • Practice with British, Australian, and American accents — the test uses all three.
  • Read questions before each section starts. Underline keywords.
  • Practice spelling — common words like "environment," "accommodation," and "government" are frequently misspelled.
  • Listen to English podcasts and BBC/ABC news daily for at least 30 minutes.

Reading Module Tips

The Academic Reading module has three long passages with 40 questions in 60 minutes. Time management is critical.

  • Do not read the entire passage first. Skim headings and first sentences, then go to questions.
  • Practice True/False/Not Given questions — these are the trickiest for most Nepali students.
  • Build your vocabulary with academic word lists. Learn words in context, not isolation.
  • Allocate 20 minutes per passage. If stuck on a question, move on and come back.

Writing Module Tips

Writing is typically the lowest-scoring module for Nepali students. The key issues are task achievement, coherence, and grammar.

  • Task 1 (150 words): Describe the data — do not give opinions. Use comparison language. Practice describing graphs, charts, tables, and processes.
  • Task 2 (250 words): Structure your essay: introduction, 2 body paragraphs, conclusion. Each body paragraph should have one clear main idea with supporting examples.
  • Avoid memorized templates — examiners recognize them and they limit your score.
  • Practice writing under timed conditions. Get your writing reviewed by a qualified teacher.
  • Common grammar issues for Nepali students: subject-verb agreement, article usage (a/an/the), and tense consistency.

Speaking Module Tips

The Speaking test is a face-to-face conversation with an examiner. Many Nepali students feel nervous, but preparation helps enormously.

  • Part 1 (Introduction): Practice talking about familiar topics — hometown, studies, hobbies. Keep answers 2-3 sentences long.
  • Part 2 (Cue Card): You get 1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to speak. Use the preparation time to jot down key points. Practice speaking for exactly 2 minutes.
  • Part 3 (Discussion): This tests your ability to discuss abstract ideas. Practice giving opinions with reasons and examples.
  • Do not memorize answers — speak naturally. Fillers like "well" and "actually" are fine and make you sound natural.
  • Practice with a study partner or in front of a mirror daily.

Preparation Timeline

Most Nepali students need 2-3 months of focused preparation to reach their target score. If your current level is around 5.0-5.5, plan for 3-4 months. We recommend taking a practice test first to identify your baseline, then focusing on your weakest modules.
